Helping young people to shine and flourish
Edexcel, part of the global Pearson Group was my first occasion to work with an education provider, producing a series of campaigns promoting their courses and publications to schools and local authorities.
More recently, I have helped an award-winning Harper Collins author and founder of PSHE Education to re-brand their business and increase their online presence.
In addition, I have evolved the NISA Learning brand (see below), a global online education provider that focusses on home-schooling and SEND provision in the UK. My work over a 6-month period, involved providing clear guidelines on how to employ their brand across all marketing material, provided guidance on their website and templates and guidance on their social media platforms.
The last two case-studies have been a personal educational journey, providing a clearer understanding of why the traditional UK educational system doesn’t suit everyone, which the late Sir Ken Robinson had banged on about for decades.
“1 in 7 people are neurodivergent, meaning that the brain functions, learns and processes information differently from everyone else. That’s 15% of the UK student population.”
When you delve deep into the facts or, perhaps you have learnt experience from within your own family circles, you quickly learn how difficult it can be for neurodiverse students to conform to a set way of thinking and approach to studying. And that’s the benefit of being in the creative industry, it requires you to research well which consequently can open your eyes to new understanding and empathy.
According to the University of Edinburgh, most people are neurotypical, meaning that the brain functions and processes information in the way society expects. 1 in 7 people (more than 15% of UK students) are neurodivergent, meaning that the brain functions, learns and processes information differently. So, it would be reasonable to suggest that a one-size-fits-all education system needs a rethink, to provide each child with every opportunity to shine and flourish in the right environment.
If you were to look at the results of a few non-traditional education providers such as NISAI Learning, you may be surprised to learn that pupils often exceed the national pass rate. More importantly, they are happier, confident individuals that go on to tertiary education and successful employment.
Though I have no desire to stand in front of a class of 30, hormonally challenged, Year 10 students, I’m pleased that the skills and experience I’ve honed over my career have lent themselves to a business that will make a difference to young people’s lives.
